Sir Robert Gillespie Reid (1842 - 1908) was contracted by the Newfoundland Government to complete the trans-island railway. In the 1940's, Reid was listed in "Ripley's Believe It or Not" as being the biggest landowner in all of North America. He had received a grant from the government of over 5 million acres of land as partial payment for building the railway.
